November 19th

feline, fox and crow

prowled around the hidden nest

veiled by summer leaves

The tree opposite has revealed a nest after shedding its leaves. I’d like to think whatever bird built it managed to rear their young successfully, the local hunters oblivious to the morsels growing up behind the leaves. But in all likelihood the nest got invaded as it’s right on the lane, cats being the biggest threat. You never know though!

September 26th

the wood mouse pulls his

dried red onion peel blankets

over his slim back

settled and warm in

his cosy borrower bed

whisker twitch – goodnight!

Two Haikus squished together today.

Our cat Katie had brought in a mouse, got bored and let it go. She’s so fickle, like an Roman Emperor, she normally revels in bloodshed, but she just gave up on this one. No idea how long it was living behind the chest under the stairs, but it seemed to be building an extension. The bed was lovely. Lots of onion peels. Looked quite cosy. We tried to catch it (to let it go) but it escaped into the bathroom and we think it’s squeezed into a tiny gap under the bath.

There’s only one thing for it, non-lethal traps! Filled with peanut butter!

September 20th

tense long limbs twitch feel

one eye open seven shut

a hunter waiting

Spiders everywhere. it’s definitely Autumn, there’s a chill in the air. This big wolf spider was claiming my £1 off Tesco voucher. I let him keep it. Not sure what he’d spend it on though.

August 16th

eyes wide reflected

nocturnal adventurer

blinks and disappears

Katie our cat isn’t spending much time in the house in these mild and balmy evenings. She’s off, hunting and gallivanting. We rarely see her.

April 8th

She falls from the sky

flint arrowhead cuts the air

and rends tiny hearts

I was looking out the window of the train, in the distance I saw a bird of prey attack, dropping like a stone, disappearing behind the horizon into some nameless field.

February 27th

Toying paws a blur,
Animated killer stalks,
Mouse rescue required.

This story has a happy ending, Debbie rescued the mouse that Katie caught and brought in to play with, it got released back into the paddock behind our garden. Katie always looks so pissed off when we take live (or dead) animals off her. She used to bring them as presents, but seeing that we didn’t eat them or thank her for them, she just ignores us now and concentrates solely on her own self gratification.

February 14th

Keen eyed, Fan tailed, Hunts,

Wind tamed above the hedgerows,

Flutters, wings and heart.

I made and wrote this for Debbie today. I even did colouring in like a big boy! (see below). I went for a run earlier on and saw a Kestrel, maintaining its position in the sky, using it’s tail and rapid wing beats to expertly adjust for wind buffeting. I ran right underneath it, it eventually soared off to another field edge, once again scanning the ground for movement and a meal.

I’m quite proud of the drawing, as it actually looks a little bit like a Kestrel and not some sort of plucked mini-vulture after a recent flame throwing incident.

You don’t have to be good at art (or writing!). Sometimes it’s the little things on Valentines day.
